How much does an AI website cost?
Updated: September 18, 2026 · By Teckel AI
An AI website costs anywhere from 10 USD a month to more than 30,000 USD, because the phrase covers three products that do not compete with each other. A site built with AI on a builder such as Wix, Hostinger or Durable runs roughly 10 to 99 USD a month. A site with AI features, usually a chatbot, runs 20 to 100 USD a month for a widget or 5,000 to 30,000 USD for a custom build. And a site readable by AI, often called agent-ready, starts at 2,500 USD as a project. None of the three guarantees that an AI assistant will cite you.
That is the answer to the question as asked. The more useful answer is that the number on the quote is decided by which of the three you are buying, and most quotes never say. This guide prices all three, shows what two current US pricing guides actually publish, and then covers the one line item that appears in neither: whether the machines reading the web can read your site at all.
Why does "AI website" mean three different things?
Because vendors use the same phrase for products with different buyers. A builder sells AI as a construction tool: it generates the site for you. An agency sells AI as a feature: a chatbot that answers inside the site. An applied AI consultancy sells AI as an audience: a site that answer engines can read, extract and represent correctly. The three are advertised identically and their prices differ by three orders of magnitude.
Getting the wrong one is expensive in both directions. People pay project money for something a 20 dollar builder would have solved, and people run a business that depends on being discovered on a platform whose output no crawler can read.
1. A site built with AI: 10 to 99 USD a month
This is the cheapest meaning and the most searched one. Hostinger starts around 3 USD a month on a long contract, Durable runs 15 to 20 USD a month, and Wix starts around 17 USD a month on an annual plan. Published US guides put the category at 10 to 99 USD a month. You describe the business, the tool generates layout, copy and images in minutes, hosting included.
For basic presence it works. The real limits:
- Generic content. The generated copy reads like a template because it is one. If you do not rewrite it, your site says what thousands of others say.
- Little control over structure. You do not decide the HTML, the structured data, or what is extractable by an answer engine.
- You do not own the code. The site lives on the platform. Moving later means rebuilding.
- The scope is publishing and human experience. Crawl controls, extraction, entity clarity and measurement have to be audited separately.
2. A site with AI features: 20 USD a month to 30,000 USD
Here "with AI" means the site carries a chatbot, an assistant or a recommender. The range is wide because there are two ways to buy it. A subscription widget costs 20 to 100 USD a month and installs in hours. A custom chatbot wired to your inventory or your CRM costs 5,000 to 30,000 USD according to 2026 sector pricing guides (Master of Code, Crescendo AI), and each additional system integration can add 5,000 to 25,000 USD.
The typical mistake is buying the feature before the audience. A brilliant chatbot on a site nobody visits answers conversations that do not exist. An AI feature pays when there is already traffic to handle.
3. A site readable by AI (agent-ready): from 2,500 USD
An agent-ready site lowers the technical and editorial barriers for different search engines and agents. The audit looks at the HTML response, rendering, crawl controls, entity clarity, evidence and server logs. Google can process JavaScript and other platforms vary. No architecture guarantees citations, traffic or conversion, so the value has to be measured in your own funnel.
At Teckel AI we build this category as AI Websites, from 2,500 USD. The price covers the complete site (design, content and development, no templates), the architecture for being cited (static HTML readable without JavaScript, schema.org, direct extractable answers) and measurement of which AI agents visit and what they read. Those properties reduce technical barriers. They do not guarantee citations, traffic or sales. What the category actually is, we explain in what is an agent-ready website.
What the US market actually quotes in 2026
The three ranges above are the AI framing. If you request quotes in the United States you get the traditional framing instead, priced by type of site. Here is what two current published guides say, side by side.
| Item | Leadpages (published June 14, 2025, updated July 13, 2026) | Webyking (last updated August 20, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| DIY builder | 10 to 99 USD per month | 0 to 50 USD or more per month |
| Landing page | Not priced separately | 100 to 1,000 USD templated; 1,500 to 2,500 USD or more custom |
| Small business site | 500 to 5,000 USD freelance | 2,000 to 8,000 USD |
| Agency build | 5,000 to 30,000 USD or more | 3,000 to 20,000 USD or more |
| Ecommerce | Not priced separately | 5,000 to 25,000 USD or more |
| Custom web application | Not priced separately | 10,000 to 50,000 USD or more |
| US hourly rate | Not published | 100 to 180 USD |
| Hosting | 3 to 10 USD per month shared; 20 to 60 USD VPS | 50 to 200 USD per year |
| Maintenance | 0 to 50 USD per month DIY; 50 to 200 USD custom | 50 to 200 USD per month |
Two things fall out of that table, and both matter before you sign anything.
First, the same nominal product spans a wide range across two guides published within fourteen months of each other. A small business website is 500 USD or 8,000 USD depending on who you ask, and an agency build tops out at 20,000 USD in one guide and 30,000 USD or more in the other. Neither is lying. The point is that "small business website" does not describe a scope. Before you ask for a number, ask for deliverables: how many pages, who writes the content, who shoots the photography, which integrations, how many revision rounds, and who owns the code at the end.
Second, and this is why this page exists: AI appears in both guides only as a cheaper way to build the site. Leadpages references an AI website builder as a product feature. Webyking prices AI builders as a platform subscription at 0 to 50 USD or more a month, listed apart from professional design. Neither guide prices machine readability at all. The market still quotes by type of site, not by whether the site can be read by the systems that now answer questions about your category. That gap between the price list and the promise is exactly where buyers overpay for the word and underbuy the property.
The line item no quote includes: AI crawlers do not run JavaScript
There is a silent assumption in almost every website quote: that if the page looks right in a browser, it looks right to everyone. For answer engines that is not true, and it is the difference between the first meaning and the third.
Vercel and the consultancy MERJ measured real AI crawler behavior and published the result on December 17, 2024. The conclusion, verbatim: "None of the major AI crawlers currently render JavaScript". The study names OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User and GPTBot, and Anthropic's ClaudeBot.
The nuance matters, because it is not that they ignore the files. In that measurement ChatGPT's crawler did download JavaScript on 11.50% of its requests and Claude's on 23.84%, but neither executed it. What ChatGPT prioritized was HTML, 57.70% of its downloads, and Claude mostly loaded images, 35.17%. Downloading is not reading. If your content only appears after JavaScript runs, for those crawlers that content does not exist.
Two honest caveats before anyone uses this as a sales argument on you. One: Google's search crawler does process JavaScript, so this says nothing about your Google ranking. Two: it is a dated measurement, from December 2024, and platforms change without notice, so the correct response is to measure again rather than cite it forever. What holds is the principle. Between a site whose content lives in the HTML and one that assembles it in the browser, the first puts fewer barriers in front of any agent.
You can check your own site in thirty seconds without hiring anyone: open it, disable JavaScript in your browser, and reload. What is left on screen is roughly what an AI crawler reads.
The reader that almost never sends traffic back
There is a second economic fact that changes how you should think about this budget, and it is the reason "being readable" stopped being a nice-to-have.
Cloudflare published crawl to refer ratios in July 2025: roughly 1,091 crawls per single referral for OpenAI and 38,065 crawls per referral for Anthropic. In the post of July 1, 2025, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince put the same shift in plain terms: "With OpenAI, it's 750 times more difficult to get traffic than it was with the Google of old. With Anthropic, it's 30,000 times more difficult."
Read that against a website quote and the consequence is uncomfortable but clarifying. Your content is being read at industrial scale by systems that almost never send a visitor back. The click is not the payoff anymore. What you are buying when you pay for readability is not traffic, it is being represented correctly inside an answer you will never see: your prices, your scope, your category, your name spelled the way you spell it.
The counterweight, and the reason this is not purely bad news: the visitors who do arrive that way convert better. Semrush reported in 2025 that traffic from AI search converts at about 4.4 times the rate of traditional organic search. Fewer visits, better qualified. That combination is what justifies treating machine readability as a line item rather than a bonus, and it is also why the honest version of this pitch never promises volume.
The three meanings, side by side
| Dimension | Built with AI (builder) | With AI features | Readable by AI (agent-ready) |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you buy | A site generated from a template | A chatbot or assistant on your site | Crawl controls, extractable content and measurement |
| Typical price | 10 to 99 USD per month | 20 to 100 USD per month (widget) or 5,000 to 30,000 USD (custom) | From 2,500 USD per project |
| Time | Minutes | Hours (widget) to months (custom) | Weeks |
| Who it is for | Basic presence | Businesses with traffic to handle | Businesses that live on being found |
| Real limit | Generic content, no control of structure | Does not create visits, it handles them | Requires a project, not self service |
| Who reads it | Humans who already arrived | Humans who already arrived | Humans and answer engines |
What it costs over three years, not on day one
The comparison almost nobody runs is the three year one, and it is the one that changes the decision.
| Item | Builder subscription | Custom project (US) | AI Website (agent-ready) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up front | 0 USD | 2,000 to 8,000 USD in the typical small business range | From 2,500 USD |
| Recurring | 10 to 99 USD per month | Infrastructure: hosting 3 to 60 USD per month by type, maintenance 50 to 200 USD per month per published US guides | Infrastructure; the site is already yours |
| Subscription alone, 3 years | 360 to 3,564 USD | Not applicable | Not applicable |
| Who owns the code | The platform | Negotiated; get it in writing | You do |
| If you want to move | Rebuild | Depends on the contract | You take the files |
| Readable by AI agents | Has to be audited | Has to be audited | It is the design requirement |
The reading is not that builders are expensive. Over three years a builder still costs less than any project, and for basic presence that remains the right answer. The reading is that the monthly fee is not the total cost. Code ownership, portability and machine readability are part of the price and appear in no quote. If you are comparing two proposals, compare those six rows, not the number on the first page.
Which one is right for you?
The honest answer depends on how much of your revenue depends on being found:
- If you need basic presence (your address, your phone, your photos exist online), a builder at 20 USD a month is fine. Paying more would be a mistake.
- If you already have traffic and lose sales by not answering it, a well integrated chatbot pays. Start with a widget before spending five figures on a custom build.
- If your buyers ask ChatGPT or Perplexity before they buy, you need an agent-ready site. The question is no longer whether AI systems visit your site. It is whether they can read it when they arrive.
One note of healthy skepticism before you sign any quote with "AI" in it. Anushree Verma, senior director analyst at Gartner, put it bluntly: "Most agentic AI projects right now are early stage experiments or proof of concepts that are mostly driven by hype and are often misapplied" (Gartner, June 2025). The same firm projects that more than 40% of those projects will be cancelled before the end of 2027. Buying AI without knowing which of the three products you are buying is how companies end up in the McKinsey statistic: 88% of companies use AI in at least one function and only 6% see material bottom line impact (State of AI, November 2025).
Where Teckel AI fits
Teckel AI is a Mexican applied AI consultancy working remotely with clients in several countries: we diagnose where AI pays in your business, design the solution and implement it, focused on the AI your company will actually use. On the web side we work the third category, AI Websites from 2,500 USD. If your question is broader than the site, the difference between hiring an agency and hiring a consultancy is covered in AI agency vs AI consultant, and what it means to contract from outside Mexico in AI consulting in Mexico.
If you do not know which of the three meanings applies to your case, that is exactly the conversation in the initial diagnosis, at no cost. If you prefer a written analysis, the strategic report costs 50 USD.

Frequently asked questions
How much does an AI website cost in 2026?
It depends which of three products you mean. A site generated by an AI builder such as Wix, Hostinger or Durable costs roughly 10 to 99 USD per month. A site with AI features, typically a chatbot, runs 20 to 100 USD per month for a widget or 5,000 to 30,000 USD for a custom build, per 2026 sector pricing guides. A site that is readable by AI, sometimes called agent-ready, starts at 2,500 USD as a project. None of the three guarantees citations or recommendations in AI answers.
What does a professional website cost in the United States in 2026?
Two current published guides disagree by a wide margin for the same nominal product. Leadpages, in a guide published June 14, 2025 and updated July 13, 2026, puts freelance builds at 500 to 5,000 USD one time and agency builds at 5,000 to 30,000 USD or more, with DIY builders at 10 to 99 USD per month. Webyking, last updated August 20, 2026, puts a small business website at 2,000 to 8,000 USD, agencies at 3,000 to 20,000 USD or more, and US hourly rates at 100 to 180 USD. Neither guide prices AI readability at all. Both mention AI only as a cheaper way to build the site.
Why do AI crawlers not see my website?
Because if your content only appears after JavaScript runs, most AI crawlers never read it. Vercel and MERJ measured real crawler behavior and published on December 17, 2024 that none of the major AI crawlers currently render JavaScript, naming OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User and GPTBot, and Anthropic's ClaudeBot. They do download JavaScript files, 11.50% of requests for ChatGPT and 23.84% for Claude, but they do not execute them. Google's search crawler does process JavaScript, so this says nothing about your Google ranking, and it is a dated measurement worth re-verifying.
What is an agent-ready website?
A site built so that different crawlers and agents face fewer barriers: content in the HTML rather than assembled in the browser, valid structured data, direct extractable answers and server side measurement of which agents visit and what they read. Those properties improve technical readiness. They do not guarantee that ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude will cite you.
Is it worth paying 2,500 USD for a website when a builder costs 20 USD a month?
It depends on whether your revenue depends on being found. For basic presence, a builder is the correct answer and paying more is a mistake. If buyers ask an AI assistant before they ask you, compare crawl controls, extractable content, entity clarity, evidence and measurement, and verify the value in your own funnel. No benchmark guarantees conversion.
How much does it cost to add an AI chatbot to a website?
A subscription widget costs 20 to 100 USD per month and installs in hours. A custom chatbot wired to your inventory or CRM costs 5,000 to 30,000 USD according to 2026 sector pricing guides, and each additional integration with your systems can add 5,000 to 25,000 USD. The common mistake is buying the feature before the audience: a chatbot on a site nobody visits answers conversations that do not exist.
Do AI assistants send traffic back to the sites they read?
Far less than search engines did. Cloudflare published crawl to refer ratios in July 2025 showing roughly 1,091 crawls per referral for OpenAI and 38,065 per referral for Anthropic. In the same post on July 1, 2025, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince wrote that with OpenAI it is 750 times more difficult to get traffic than it was with the Google of old, and with Anthropic 30,000 times more difficult. The practical consequence for a website budget is that being readable is now mostly about being represented correctly inside the answer, not about the click.
What does an AI website cost over three years?
A builder subscription at 10 to 99 USD per month is 360 to 3,564 USD over three years and the site still belongs to the platform. A custom project has no platform fee but does have infrastructure: published US guides put hosting at 3 to 60 USD per month depending on type and maintenance at 50 to 200 USD per month. The monthly fee is not the total cost. Code ownership, portability and machine readability are part of the price and appear in no quote.
